International Motor Insurance Card

The International Motor Insurance Card can be issued and presented in PDF format on electronic devices starting from January 1, 2025, provided that the national law of the issuing country does not impose any restrictions. The authorities of the visited country must accept the IMIC in PDF format as sufficient proof of insurance. This decision was made by the COB General Assembly in 2023. It was approved by the Working Group on Road Traffic Safety of the Inland Transport Committee of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

For NBI member companies, this means:

  • The IMIC can continue to be issued in green or white.
  • The IMIC may still be issued on paper.
  • The IMIC may be issued electronically in PDF format, but in white.

If the IMIC is sent to customers in PDF format from January 1, 2025, NBI member companies no longer need to advise them to print the document.

For the authorities, this means:

  • The existing regulations regarding the IMIC remain in force (ASTRA directive on insurance obligation control).
  • Foreign motorists may present the IMIC on mobile devices when entering Switzerland.
  • The electronic IMIC in PDF format is only valid if it is white.
